Frequently Asked Questions

What do I do if I’m currently in crisis and need to speak to someone immediately?

We recommend the Seattle Crisis Hotline at 206-461-3222, as well as the National Suicide Lifeline at 988 for immediate care. They both are free services, available 24/7. Do not hesitate to call.

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

There’s only one way to find out. Some clients know exactly what the want to talk about right off the bat, while others may need some help finding the words to get started. We suggest starting with a free 15 minute phone call or video consultation to see how it feels before an initial session.

Where is Agate Therapy Group located?

We are located at 614 W McGraw St, Seattle, WA 98119. We are in Upper Queen Anne, right across the street from Macrina Bakery and nestled between Malena’s Taco Shop and Ken’s Market.  We also provide Telehealth services to those in Washington State if our physical location is a bit out of reach.

Do you offer Telehealth sessions?

All of our current therapists offer Telehealth services. An unfortunate aspect of telehealth is that legally, the client and the therapist must both be located in the state where the therapist is licensed. There are few exceptions, as some states allow the rule to be bent with written documentation and a blessing from their department of health, but in most cases, it’s out of our hands if you’re located anywhere else. That being said, all of our current therapists are licensed in Washington state. This means that while we’re excited for your vacation to Hawaii, we’ll have to wait until you get home to see you again- even if it’s online. This also means that if you are located in any other state other than Washington, we most likely can’t be the therapists for you.

How do I schedule a session?

You can call, email, or fill out a new patient inquiry. We will get back to you within 48 hours with times we have available.

How do I choose my therapist?

Feel free to read our bios or to ask for a recommendation. We will do our best to find someone you’ll feel seen by and cared for who specializes in your needs.

Do you work with kids & teenagers?

Yes! Kids and teens of all genders are welcome, ages 6+. Check out Sheree, Patty, Megan, Sophia, and Natalie under Our Therapists for teens, and Jodi for kids and teens!

Do you offer couples sessions or family sessions?

Yes to both! Megan offers couples and families sessions, and Sophia and Natalie offer couples sessions.

How much involvement into my child’s/teen’s therapy can I expect to have?

For children ages 6-12, we are able to engage with you frequently and give updates to pertinent information on your child’s therapy. This may include sessions with just you, just them, and sessions together. We also highly encourage parents and guardians to be in their own therapy while your child is undergoing counseling.

For teens, we encourage parents and legal guardians to show up for the first session with their kid when possible. We want everyone to feel comfortable and hope to be on the same page as to what is important and what to expect. Please know, 13 is considered the age of consent for health care in Washington state (therapy included). This means that teens are considered adults in the eyes of the state while they’re in counseling, and no therapist with a license from the Washington State Department of Health can or will share details about their sessions just the same as if they were 18. If your teen writes you down as their emergency contact and signs a release of information saying we can speak with you specifically, we can and will contact you when it comes to scheduling, billing, and major safety concerns. If this doesn’t feel like enough, please take comfort in knowing that if your kid’s wellbeing is being compromised, we are legally mandated to report our findings to child protection services, and will also share our concerns with you if they’d like us to. We want nothing more than to make sure your kiddo is safe and hope to give you peace of mind in the process. We also gladly support them, if and when they choose, to share details of their sessions at home. We welcome your emails and any info you want to share at any time; however, this will not be kept secret from your teen. Please note that by law, we cannot share your teen’s news the same way with you or anyone else.

For all minors, studies show that when there is a child going through a rough patch, having the parent or guardian in therapy, even before the child, offers even better results than having the child in therapy themselves. When both are working with a therapist- the most relief is found.

Can I switch therapists?

Absolutely. We won’t be offended if you’re curious what sitting with a different therapist is like (and that’s whether it’s at Agate or somewhere else). Let us know and we’ll make it happen as a first priority. It’s all about a good fit.

How long do I do therapy?

This is completely up to you. At Agate, we do not believe in signing up for a number of sessions beforehand, but instead, have a take it as you go approach. While many clients begin to feel relief within the first few sessions, clients can range from seeking therapy from weeks to months to years.

How do you keep my information safe?
