Legal & Ethical Opportunities for Therapists and their Clients
Agate Therapy Group is an Anti Fee Splitting Company
Not familiar with the term? Fee Splitting is when a company hires you as a independent contractor, keeps all your payment for your services, and gives you a portion back. Companies market it as fair, often keeping as much as 65% of your pay and giving you the measly 35%+ for compensation. It’s a way to take advantage of an independent contractor when there is fear of failure and a feeling of isolation. Sadly, even though it has been an illegal practice in the state of Washington since 2014, it is not monitored and is still the most common way groups are run. To be legal, companies must hire you as an employee with a W2, or you must hire them as your independent contractor. You lose control of of your business and get scammed in the process otherwise. This goes for all sorts of professions, like hair stylists and registered nurses.
Therapy Should be Ethical and Legal for Therapists and Clients Alike
You have and continue to work hard to be knowledgable, present, genuinely caring, and boundaried; we think you deserve to be paid accordingly too. Because of this, when we have openings, Agate Therapy Group extends invitations to be part, and to have you hire us as your independent contractor. We only look for mutually excellent fits. Perks include a cozy, furnished office space in Upper Queen Anne, billing and scheduling services, the ability to see clients remotely, in-network access to some insurance companies, a weekly consult group with like-minded folks, and, of course, any referrals we have where it’d be a good fit. We want to help you run your business in a way where you feel honored. See the Opportunities portion below for details.
We know, it’s wild. Here are some references, along with the name of our lawyer (who is also a therapist) if you ever find yourself subject to Fee Splitting: RCW 19.68.030 | ACA A.10.b | Interview 1 | Interview 2 | Dr. Eric Strom, JD, LMHC (he/they) - https://strom-consulting.com
